‘Into the Wild’, a film directed by Sean Penn is based on the story of young Christopher McCandless, who rejects his sheltered middle-class living in preference for a life of loneliness. The autobiography First they Killed my Father, tells the frightening story of five-year-old Loung Ung who is forced to leave her comfortable middle-class living in Phnom Penh by the Khmer Rouge. Crushed by the loss of her parents and two of her six siblings, Loung steers her rage at the leader of the Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot. The experiences of loss, inhumanity and starvation reconstruct the innocent little girl into a traumatized victim of war who finds it difficult to quit the need for revenge.
