Pansies had always been her favorite. Before Ballarat, before Appleyard College, before her incarceration and the renunciation of her liberty, Sara Waybourne recalls a time akin to something like happiness; if such a thing existed.

The oppressive heaviness of the out of place Italian Mansionette impresses itself on her, a weight of immutable force. Unstoppable, despite recoiling from its grip, she surrenders, crushed. Standing now, a silhouette against a dimly lit window pane, she is a mirage, a spectre, caught between the perpetual drudgery of an unyielding fortress, and the uncertainty of what lies beyond.
