Description

Take a sneak peek
The interplay of light and dark works to establish the ambiguity of the existential questions posed by the novella ‘Heart Darkness’. The importance of determining our own truth, of forming beliefs based on ‘self-knowledge’ and understanding, is, according to Conrad, the only way we can live our lives. Yet when we are confronted with the possibility of belief being hollow, the ‘impalpable greyness’ of this fact compels us to reexamine our lives anew. The search for the nature of truth, knowledge and belief shapes Marlow’s story as he creeps on towards the inner station. Yet we, like Marlow, come to understand that the truth is not recoverable in the hard shell of a cracked kernel but rather, is ‘outside, enveloping the tale’.
