Description

Take a sneak peek

In Pi’s incredible story of survival detailed in Yann Martel’s ‘Life of Pi’, Richard Parker is an essential driving force. His presence on the lifeboat with Pi during his 277 day trial in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is essential to Pi’s survival. Whether he be a literal Bengal tiger or, as the Japanese investigators conclude from the story without the animals, a darkness in Pi himself, Pi credits his survival to him. Not only is he central to Pi’s survival, Richard Parker is a central driving force for the entire text, as it is the presence of this Bengal Tiger on the lifeboat which causes the Japanese investigators to doubt his story with the animals and insist on another one. Martel’s structuring of the three parts of the text is integral in tying together the allegory presented of the choice people have to believe the better story over ‘dry yeastless factuality’, which emphasizes the importance of belief in ‘Life of Pi’.
