Directed by George Tillman Jr. and adapted from the novel by the same name ‘The Hate U Give’ explores the relationship between the environments individuals are born into, and the choices that they are able to make. Narrated in the first-person, Starr Carter becomes a figurehead for the voice of change in a community where the Afro-American, low socio-economic demography of Garden Heights defines the outcomes of those who reside there. Defying the acronym ‘THUG Life’, Starr becomes the embodiment of starlight, challenging the rule of the King Lords whose dominance seems to be uncontestable. Acting with the support of her family, Starr confronts the intimidatory threats of the thugs in order to advocate for change. Through the courage of the central protagonist and her family, Tillman Jr. proffers that social determinants of fate are not insurmountable, affirming how the decision to speak out, can alter the course of one’s life.
