Janet Lewis depicts a world dominated by rigid hierarchical structures in her novel “The Wife Of Martin Guerre”. Set in 16th C France the novel explores the domination of such structures over the lives of individuals. The court system is an example of how absolute authority was, with legal justice meted out regardless of the moral implications. Certainly, Bertrande the main character seeks legal justice to compensate for the compromising moral position she has found herself in. But instead of gaining moral compensation when legal justice is attained and Arnaud Du Tilh is found guilty of numerous offences, Bertrande is rejected by her husband and in turn, takes on the responsibility of sentencing a man to death. Meanwhile, the real Martin Guerre is protected by the legal system as he has broken no law, even though he can be seen to be the moral villain.
